Community happiness grows in their garden
My immediate response … hooray, they have returned!
I’m referring to the skyward reaching flowers of this Spring’s Route 100 roadside display in Lowhill Township, which popped up just after Easter.
By the number of people sending messages, waving thumbs up or honking the horn, creators Phil Rossetto and Greg Snider have surmised the return of these giant enhanced spring flowers was certainly overdue and is certainly a viewer favorite. Haven’t had the pleasure of coming upon the beauty of these fabricated daffodils, tulips, daisies and pansies with their lush foliage; look at the size of the mailbox and lamp post in the photo to get a clear perspective of the sheer size of these brilliantly colored blooms.
Phil theorized the pleasant public response to this latest of almost two decades of ongoing seasonal and holiday displays as “Perhaps because this one is unusual.”
Remembering how this duo loves to scour dollar and hardware stores as well as home improvement centers for materials which they can envision fitting their needs,
Phil reminded me, “this floral garden all started with a Styrofoam winter rose bush cover, which happened to look like the trumpet of a daffodil. The rest just grew from it. The petals are made of steel house flashing cut with a pair of tin snips. All materials have to be weather resistant. Even polyurethane treated cardboard cannot be used because it just doesn’t withstand the north and road winds, and rain.”
Just how long the display will remain in place is dependent on our unpredictable weather.
A perfect example; this weekend’s gusty winds threatened the stability of the flowers after less than a week.
For those seeking out Phil and Greg’s many seasonal displays along Route 100 for the first time … travel north 6 miles along Route 100 from the Fogelsville intersection of Tilghman and Route 100 and watch on your right side just past the Christ’s Church of Lowhill or travel south on Route 100 from the Routes 309 and 100 intersection for 2 miles and the display will be on your left … be ready to pull to the side for a pleasant photo op.
