Brooke Saul following in mom’s footsteps
Like daughter, like mother.
Northampton senior Brooke Saul, and her mother Carrie, the Konkrete Kids’ head field hockey coach, are both relishing and reminiscing about this year’s track season.
The younger Saul just completed the final stages of the Kids’ regular season, and she has been running in the 200, 400, 800, and relay teams. Ironically, she and her mother, a Northampton graduate, have run in the same events.
At Whitehall’s Zephyr Invitational recently, Brooke finished eighth in the 400 (1:02.51) and she was part of the team’s 4x400 (4:24.44) and 4x800 (10:20.33) teams that finished third and first respectively.
Since she was very young, the younger Saul recalled how running was a staple in her life. She eventually made the transition to track in high school.
“When I was younger, everyone said that I pretty much ran everywhere,” said Saul. “I had played lacrosse for the youth program, but when the season was canceled in the spring of 2020 due to COVID, I really didn’t miss it.
“I decided to give track a try because I was told I was pretty fast. My mom ran for Northampton, and she had an awesome experience, met many people, and gained many friends.”
The older Saul recalled how she believed her daughter was likely destined for a track career, as well as also following her mother’s footsteps in field hockey. Brooke has committed to play field hockey next fall at Frostburg State University.
“I witnessed her wanting to run everywhere,” said Saul. “I signed her up for youth soccer before field hockey started in second grade. She always wanted to travel with me to events when I coach at Phillipsburg.
“Since I ran for (head coach Tim) coach Caffrey in high school, I knew it would be a great experience for her, too.”
The younger Saul and her teammates have dealt with less than desirable weather conditions this season, but she has managed to post some of the better times in the area in her events.
So far, her season and personal bests have been 27.6 in the 200, 1:02.5 in the 400, and 2:25 in the 800, and she has drawn plenty of inspiration.
“Almost every meet this season, the weather has not been great and very windy,” she said. “Yet there were a few days when I felt I was running my best.
“The biggest influences in my track career have been coach Caf (Caffrey) and coach Albright. They believed in me and talked me through the mental part of running track. My teammates also help push me to be my very best every time that I run.”
The younger Saul has taken her season literally in stride.
“As a competitor, I always worked to be faster than the day before,” she said. “I knew I had to be fast in field hockey, and that’s helped me grow as a player.”
Her mother has league medals in the 4x100 and 4x800 as well as a fourth-place finish in the 400 at league and districts. He daughter is just four seconds off her PR in the 400 (102.1).
Regardless of the results, the older Saul has cherished all the moments.
“It has been absolutely special,” stressed her mother. “I see a lot of her work ethic, and I I’m proud of her progress every day.”
