Apartment fire on 3rd St.

East Third Street became a parking lot for local fire departments during an upper-story blaze in one of the Southside’s new apartment buildings Friday afternoon.

Northampton County 911 received multiple calls and alarm signals around 1:17 p.m. and city firefighters were on-the scene at the Five 10 Flats building within 90 seconds. By that time, the fire had already been upgraded to two-alarm severity and would eventually reach four-alarm, as responders from Allentown, Easton, Lower Saucon Township and elsewhere came to the city’s aid.

Bethlehem Chief Michael Reich said in a statement flames were fanned by strong winds across the rooftop.

Police assisted in successfully evacuating all residents without any reported injuries. There were no injuries of emergency personnel reported, and the Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team set up in the Fowler Center parking lot to assist numerous resident pets, who were also uninjured.

Reich said the fire was brought under control at 6:50 p.m. Residents on scene were escorted into the building to get their essential items, and the building was turned over to Paul Davis damage restoration company. The building will remain closed for a period of time while repairs are made.

Five 10 Flats is a five-story mixed-use building opened in 2018. It includes 95 luxury apartments and several first-floor businesses, such as a Starbucks and El Jefe Mexican Restaurant and Grill, many of which may have suffered severe water damage and may be closed for some time.
