Lehigh Township: Garden club to discuss changing climate
The next meeting of Indianland Garden Club will be 7 p.m. May 13 at Hope Lutheran Church, 4131 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville. Randy Fey, a Master Gardener, will speak about how the changing climate will impact our plant species.
If admiring the colors of the flowering shrubs and the early blooming bulbs and flowers get you excited to get out there and plant, be careful. Some of the plants you see at the big home improvement stores and area greenhouses are cold hardy and other plants are not. Make sure to check for hardiness.
Northampton County is primarily in Zone 6b; however, some areas, including the Lehigh Valley, have changed to Zone 7a, due to warming trends, with warmer winters compared to previous decades. Our area’s last frost date is typically around May 15.
The club is also planning for the annual plant sale, set for 9 a.m.-noon May 24 at the pavilion of the church.

Oplinger-Hower American Legion Post 899 of Lehigh Township launched a Hometown Heroes banner program to honor our men and women of all branches of the military who served our country, whether in wartime or peace. These banners fly year-round.
All banners are printed on both sides. According to the company, banners are made of heavyweight vinyl, which is extremely durable and holds up well for more than three years. The company supplies high-quality aluminum brackets to mount the banners.
To participate in this program, you will need to fill out a form that lists the first and last name, branch of service, era, status (KIA/POW/MIA) or medals (Purple Heart/Silver Star/ Bronze Star). Provide a photo for the banner.
The forms are available at Post 899, 1140 Municipal Road, Walnutport.
Applications for the third phase of the program are being accepted. Memorial Day is coming, and now is a good time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you to all who have already responded and all who have helped to promote this program.
