Trojans finish second at league tournament

The Parkland boys tennis team finished its regular season recently with a 15-1 overall record and a 13-1 mark in East Penn Conference play.

The Trojans’ only loss this season came to unbeaten Liberty back on March 13.

Parkland will enter next month’s District 11 team tournament as the No. 2 seed behind the Hurricanes.

Last week the Trojans competed in the EPC Championship Tournament where Derek Yao took the top spot, winning the No. 1 singles bracket.

Yao was seeded second at the event. He beat Aarush Makwanna in the first round then took down No. 3 seed Gideon Knowles (Nazareth) in the second round. Yao beat top seed Noah Rodburg of Freedom in the title match.

While Yao was the only individual league champ for Parkland, two Trojan singles players and two doubles teams took second place at the event.

Manav Patel (No. 2 singles), Kevin Yao (No. 3 singles) and the teams of Jack Chu and Jacky Zhang (No. 2 doubles) and Noah Elijovich and Matthew Huang all finished as runner up at the league tournament.

Liberty, which had one individual and three doubles teams take first place at the tournament, won the team title at the league tournament with 24 points. Parkland was just behind at 22 points for the runner-up spot.

District 11 tournament play began this week with the singles tournament. It will continue with next week’s doubles tournament followed by team districts.
