St. Luke’s dedicates ‘Larry’s Corner’

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes has been a ‘community ambassador’ and orthopedic service representative for St. Luke’s University Health Network since 2011. In addition, the now 75-year-old Holmes has undergone treatment at St. Luke’s for diabetes for about five years, according to his wife Diane.

On Feb. 26, accompanied by Diane, family members, longtime friends and members of the St. Luke’s and general community, Holmes was honored and celebrated by the hospital with the dedication of ‘Larry’s Corner’ at the Easton Campus, just inside the main entrance.

“St. Luke’s wants to be part of your family,” said St. Luke’s president and CEO Richard Anderson. “You’ve been a great community ambassador.”

Known as the “Easton Assassin” from his world championship boxing days, Holmes has exemplified the spirit of the Easton community post boxing career through his commitment to the city and area.

“Thank you for recognizing our father,” said Holmes’ daughter, Dr. Misty Holmes Dorsey. “His legacy is one of resilience, as a father, husband and leader.

“Dad, we are beyond proud of you,” she said.

The celebration drew his former boxing opponent, Gerry Cooney, now a close friend, former star NFL running back and friend Ottis Anderson, and a number of area leaders. State Sen. Lisa Boscola delivered a proclamation honoring Holmes.

Artist Andrew Kish III completed the water color portrait of Holmes, capturing the intensity of Holmes in a boxing pose.

Offering his thoughts after the ceremony, Holmes, a one-time sparing partner for world champion Muhammad Ali before his own career taking off, said simply, “They can’t top this.”
