Salisbury softball beats Allen, snaps skid
Saturday got off to a cloudy, drizzly start as the Salisbury softball team faced the Allen Canaries at Patriots Park in Allentown.
Salisbury downed Allen 8-1 to snap a three-game slide and put the Lady Falcons back in the win column.
Allen scored a first-inning run before the Falcons came back to put up four runs in the second with the big blow coming from Jenna Swoyer, who tripled to drive in two runs. Alaina Pavolko and Gianna Olds both drove in a run in the inning to give Salisbury a 4-1 advantage after two innings.
The Falcons kept adding to their lead, getting an unearned run in the third before Taylor Wagner combined her bat with her speed for an inside-the-park home run in the fourth to make it 7-1.
In the sixth, the Falcons opened the inning with the first three batters all striking out but having a shot at redemption on a dropped third strike on each play.
The first two batters were thrown out at first before Amelia Swoyer beat the throw to reach base.
Salisbury used some aggressive base running to put together an insurance run. Leilanna Negron reached base on an infield single. Swoyer rounded second and went to third on the play. With Sydney Foulke at the plate, Negron took off for second and Swoyer dashed home for a successful double steal and an 8-1 lead.
Foulke singled to left to put runners on first and third, but Salisbury was unable to plate a second run in the inning.
Jenna Swoyer was in control on the mound for the Falcons, giving her team 6 1/3 innings and allowing just three hits and three walks that resulted in one unearned run. Swoyer struck out eight batters. Alexandria Hernandez came on to get the final two outs for the Falcons.
Earlier in the week, Salisbury lost to Bangor 23-8. Sophia Gunning drove in two runs and Olds scored twice in the game.
Salisbury (1-5 Colonial, 4-5 overall) has five games over eight days on their schedule. Wednesday is a makeup game against Southern Lehigh (4-3, 6-4) with a trip to Catasauqua (0-4, 0-4) tomorrow.
On Saturday, Salisbury hosts Saucon Valley (2-3, 2-4) before they travel to Northwestern (5-0, 6-1) on Monday and host Palmerton (2-4, 3-5) on Wednesday.
