Hawks eye up district berth

Liberty and Freedom are both firmly locked in for the District 11 postseason, but Bethlehem Catholic is hoping they can claw their way in too.

The Hawks entered the week 7-8 with two tough showdowns against Freedom and Easton on tap.

They need to finish .500 overall or in the conference where they sport a 6-7 mark to control their own destiny and clinch a district berth on their own.

The Hawks have struggled of late, losing three of their last four games to Easton, Liberty and Nazareth, but head coach Matt Corsi is trying to have everyone keep their heads up.

“We are staying positive,” he said. “We have been dealing with a bunch of injuries. So we are preaching positive vibes.”

Even if the Hawks fail to win this week, their quest towards districts could still get them in based on the District 11 power points where they currently sit fourth in 4A and would need to fall out of the top five to put them at risk.

The defending district champs still have that pedigree after losing only three players to graduation last year and Corsi is just hoping his team can get healthy to make another run.

“We only lost three players, so we brought a lot back,” said Corsi. “Injuries have really hurt us this year. We just have to navigate through these injuries. We still have a talented team.”

Liberty (13-4) and Freedom (11-4) are both sitting atop the power rankings in 6A and in the conference standings as the season winds down to the final two weeks.

The Hurricanes have Easton and Nazareth this week, as they look to avenge an 8-3 defeat to the Rivers a week ago, while the Pates have Phillipsburg, Becahi and Northampton on tap.
