EHS softball bounces back after first loss
The Emmaus High School softball team opened the 2025 regular season on a five-game win streak before dropping its first game of the year, a nonconference game at Abington Heights on the last weekend of March.
The Hornets then fell for the first time in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action, 9-6 at Liberty last Tuesday, April 1. They stopped the skid and began a new win streak as they recorded back-to-back double digit shutout victories over Dieruff last Wednesday, 20-0, and then East Stroudsburg South on Friday, 17-0.
“It was a good week for us,” said Emmaus head coach Richard Giering. “We played a tough Liberty team that won the district last year. But I’m proud of the way the girls handled adversity for the first time this season with back-to-back wins. We’re off to a good start, but we need to keep it going.”
In the game with the Hurricanes, Liberty scored a run in both the first and second innings before Emmaus tied it with two runs in the third. The Hurricanes, however, responded with a four-run, bottom half of the third to go up 6-2. The Hornets answered with three runs in the fifth, but Liberty added three more in the next two innings.
Emmaus finished with nine hits, led by two each from Taylor Hauver, Sadie Haefeli and Mari Eiswerth. Both Avery DeFanti and Abigail Derr recorded two RBIs.
In the win against the Huskies, the Hornets had a strong first inning that seemingly all but put the game away, bringing in 17 runs. They added three more in the second of a three-inning game. Haleigh Gigliotti went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. DeFanti had two hits and four RBIs with two runs and Derr notched two hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. Caylie Granitz, Brianna Gitski, Sophia Tranguch and Haefeli finished with two RBIs. Amanda King threw all three innings and threw a no-hitter, striking out seven for the win.
In the victory against the Cavaliers, Emmaus scored 12 runs in the first, one in the second and four in the third to end the game in three innings again. Sydney Bennett, Tranguch and Derr recorded two hits with Tranguch leading the team with four RBIs and Bennett two. Morgan Schwab netted three RBIs. Eiswerth threw all three innings and didn’t allow a hit for the victory.
Weather dependent, Emmaus is scheduled to have a busy week of action with four games. The Hornets hosted Stroudsburg Tuesday and welcome Parkland to town Wednesday before traveling to play Pocono Mountain East on Friday. Emmaus then hosts Spring-Ford in a nonconference game Saturday.
