DiComes’ late goal beats NWL

The Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team split a pair of games last week, winning a nonconference matchup before falling in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game.

The Hornets scored a late goal and held on against Northwestern Lehigh, winning 11-10 last Tuesday night, April 1. Two nights later, Emmaus was downed by undefeated Pleasant Valley 14-5.

In the win over the Tigers, senior Abby DiComes scored the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left to secure the victory for Emmaus. Emmaus was up 3-2 after the opening quarter and 6-4 at halftime.

Trailing by two goals with 8:20 to go in the fourth quarter, the Hornets rallied and tied the game at 10-10 with 22 seconds remaining, then take the lead for good on DiComes’ goal off an assist from Rylie Poll. DiComes finished with three goals and five assists to lead the offensive effort. Poll tallied a team best four goals and added an assist. Brooke Peterson added a pair of goals and both Sarah Gross and Kate Newhard had one to round out the scoring. Sofia Isaksson contributed two assists and Taylor Younker added one. Devin O’Neill finished with 11 saves in net.

In the game against the Bears, the defending District 11 champs got off to a fast start, scoring four goals in the first quarter and holding Emmaus scoreless in that frame. They led 5-2 at halftime and then took control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Hornets 9-3.

Gross recorded two goals and each of Poll, DiComes and Isaksson contributed one goal. Mckenna Guzick finished with two assists. O’Neill made eight saves.

Emmaus is now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, tied for third place with Nazareth. The Hornets hosted the Blue Eagles Tuesday and are at Liberty on Thursday.
