CTC group seeks funding for mentoring program

During the April 16 Catasauqua Communities That Care meeting, it was reported funding is still needed to run the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program in Catasauqua Area School District. Grants were sought to cover the cost, but hope is low the group will receive the funds.

It was suggested reaching out to the community businesses to act as sponsors. It was also mentioned CTC can reach out to the municipalities in CASD — Catasauqua and North Catasauqua boroughs and Hanover Township, Lehigh County — as well as both Lehigh and Northampton counties for sponsorship.

Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church Pastor Brian Riedy noted the church could help cover some of the cost. There was discussion about asking the other churches in the area to also help fund the program.

It was noted if the program gets funded, it will allow for 10 Big/Little pairings in the district. BBBS also includes an outside coordinator to ensure everything runs smoothly.

In other business, the coalition members discussed updating CTC brochures and marketing materials to reflect new partnerships. Additionally, CTC will explore starting a subcommittee to help revamp the onboarding process for new members. It was previously noted they will be looking to add new members during the summer months.

Riedy noted he was told a member of the Catasauqua Main Streets business organization is interested in joining CTC.

Coalition members discussed upcoming summer camps for local youth, including Fun in the Sun through the YMCA in North Catasauqua and Catasauqua’s summer program, both set to start at the end of the school year. Other camp information included Camp Fowler and Camp Cadet, an art camp through Banana Factory and more. Riedy noted he is still working on dates and information for the church’s music camp.

Shelley Keffer, coordinator of student services, noted special education students can apply for summer camp scholarships through Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21. Contact Keffer at keffers@cattysd.org for more information.

It was reported the Catasauqua STARS Club members, formerly SADD Club, will join a number of other students going to the Capitol in Harrisburg May 6 to advocate for better legislation surrounding vaping. The students will have the opportunity to talk directly with legislators and share their views on the issue.

Keffer noted she is seeking grants for hearing equipment and vision services in the district. Additionally, she registered CASD for the Pennsylvania Youth Survey next year.

Keffer also reported she was informed the Catasauqua Community Cares Program spring break food distribution went well. She noted approximately 40 families received food, as well as some paper products.

The next Catasauqua CTC meeting is set for 7:45 a.m. May 21 at the district administration board room, 201 N. 14th St.
