LHS ready for run
Liberty has jumped out to the front of the pack in the baseball standings this year, but the Hurricanes went through some adversity heading into the Easter weekend.
Liberty knocked off Freedom 2-1 in a win at Coca-Cola Park, then came back the next day and were shut out 7-0 in a loss to Nazareth before closing out the week with a comeback win over Williamsport on Saturday 13-12.
Sitting at 10-2 overall and 8-1 in league play, Liberty remains at the top, but the battles they went through last week are good to have as you enter the twilight of the regular season.
“It was a very big win over Freedom for us,” said head coach Andy Pitsilos. “In our loss to Nazareth, if there was a hangover it was caused by their pitcher who threw an outstanding game. Our kids came to play, he just threw a great game. Nazareth as well as the rest of our division is very good.”
Zak Novak threw 6 1/3 innings in the shutout win over the Hurricanes last week, scattering five hits and striking out five in the process.
Liberty bounced back against the Millionaires on Saturday, coming back from a 12-7 deficit in the fifth inning to score a pair of runs in the bottom of each of the last three frames for the comeback victory.
Justin Frey and Jaxon Horvath each had three RBI on the day, while Jacob Matthews had four hits and one RBI to help Liberty pull out another win.
Liberty has five games in six days this week, including East Stroudsburg South, Easton, Bethlehem Catholic, Northampton and Wilson.
With the regular season coming to a close next week, this week’s stretch will play a major role where the Hurricanes stand for the league playoffs.
“We will need our “A” game every time we come out,” said Pitsilos. “This is gonna be tough.”
