Track teams finding early-season success
The Northampton track and field team swept North Pocono in a meet from last week.
It marked three sweeps for the team over their first three meets of the season, which included Liberty in Week 1 and Whitehall in Week 2.
“Northampton girls and boys have done well in the first three weeks of the spring season within the Northampton County Division of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC),” said head coach Tim Caffrey.
Against North Pocono, the weather was extremely cold with a little rain, according to Caffrey and it didn’t help the meet was on the road in the Poconos. The NHS girls won 86-84 and the boys won 101-48.
“In the boys meet an exceptional score was performed by the sprinters sweeping their three events (100M, 200M and 400M) and both of their relays (400, 1600) scoring 37 points allowing PMW 0 points. Also a sweep in the 300H was done by the hurdlers and the javelin throwers also swept the event,” Caffrey said.
Ezekiel Spencer won the 100, Alex Schrampf took the 200, Jeremiah Strowder the 400 and Tanner Ault the 800. In the javelin, Brandon Downey led the way for the Kids. Strowder also won the triple jump making him the boys only double-winner. Dominic Barkanic won the 110 hurdles and Angelo Amato won the 300. Alex Szeplaki took the pole vault.
The boys 400 relay team was made up of Schrampf, Jacob Salamone, Alex Morales and Spencer. The 1600 team consisted of Brody Eisenhart, Matthew Torres, Amato and Schrampf, while the 3200 team had Jadiel Rodriguez, Gianni Cruz, Abel Veltri and Eliha Mashraky.
“The girls were also frozen at the event but won the meet,” Caffrey said. “There were no sweeps in the events but all three relay teams won, 400, 1600, 3200 netting 15 points combined. Many second and third places amounted to the winning score from many athletes in different events.”
The girls 400 team of Sophia Schlegel, Peighton Evangelista, Olivia Kuhns and Alayna Hahn get the win. The 1600 team was made up of Brooke Saul, Jenalise Burgos, Darcy Conrad and Joyce Shammas while the 3200 team had Kuhns, Maia Romero, Kennedy Leitch, and Lindsay Reimer.
Victoria Phillips won the 300 hurdles and Saul took the 400. Hayes was first in the pole vault and Anne Beenders was the lone double-winner with firsts in the long jump and triple jump. Alexa Wiland had the top spot in the javelin.
While the Kids have had plenty of success so far, there are challenging times ahead.
“Next meets in the Northampton County Division will be challenging with teams such as Easton, Nazareth, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic,” Caffrey said. “Both girls and boys are looking to continue their winning ways and on continuing improving their personal results individually to make their way to the postseason League and District 11 meets.”
