Kopetskie hits 1,000
Liberty guard Ava Kopetskie scored the 1,000th point of her high school career during the District XI Class 6A girls basketball semifinal with Easton on Feb. 25 at Whitehall High School.
“I was trying not to think about it,” Kopetskie said. “You know, it’s a big accomplishment, so I’m just thankful I have the support I have to allow me to complete it and finish the job. I know we didn’t win the game, but I’m ecstatic that I could get this personal achievement.”
Kopetskie hit No.1,000 on a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Anijah Davis had the assist.
“[My teammates] were a huge part. I couldn’t have done it without them,” said Kopetskie. “The wins, the losses, everything have contributed to help me achieve this. I love all of them.”
Liberty coach Jarrett Carnes had complimentary words as the Hurricane guard came off the court to cheers and applause from teammates and spectators.
“He said he knew I was gonna be a 1,000 point scorer since I was in eighth grade and he was watching me on the freshman team, so I’m just really grateful that he believes in me,” Kopetskie said.
The game was stopped momentarily for congratulations and a team photo.
“We spoke about it all week. We knew it was coming,” said Coach Carnes. “The focus was, if we keep playing, she’s gonna get that 1,000 eventually. She’s super special, super valuable. She’s one of those players that you wish you could have on your team every year. She puts a lot of work in, and she’s getting everything she deserves.”
