Relay team breaks mark

This season, Alivia Bear set the Catasauqua school record in the 800, and she also was a state qualifier in the 3200 last season.

However, at the recent district meet, Bear disregarded any individual events for the sake of her team. She is a member of the Rough Riders’ 1600 relay team that finished second in a time of 4:11.80, and, they will advance to states.

Aside from Bear, the other Roughies on the unit are Hailey Jenkins, Abby Antipas and either Florenni Bido DeJesus, or Shelby Haldeman. The group broke the school record of 4:12.7 with a time of 4:11.8.

Hailey Jenkins will also make the trip to Shippensburg this weekend, as she took a gold in the 100.

“I didn’t run in the 1,600 or 3,200 at districts in preparation for the 4 x 4 (400) because I knew we could do really well if we were all ready for it,” offered Bear. “I focused mainly on the 800 this season anyways, so I was OK with the decision.

“Our relay team ran great at districts, and it was very exciting. We knew we had to run a PR (personal record) if we wanted to qualify for states, and we ended up beating our best record by four seconds.”

Bear was well aware this was her last stand.

“Abby and I are seniors, so I think it helped us run our best splits,” added Bear. “Each of us had such a strong district race, and I knew after Abby’s insane first leg that we could do it. I’m really happy with how the season has gone, and all of my biggest goals were accomplished.

“It’s been a very positive senior season, and I’m really looking forward to competing at states again, especially because I’ll have some of my friends by my side.”

Jenkins posted a time of 12:28 in the 100, and she clocked a 25.63 in the 200 for a second-place finish. She went to states last season in the 100 after a second-place finish at districts in 12:22.

In other Roughie top-10 finishes, Ava Smith was seventh in the 3,200 (12:37.19); Julia Harth, 10th, triple jump (32-7); Lauren DeLong, eighth, shot put (31-8.5); Josiah Lafond, fourth, 300 hurdles (41.95 SB) and eighth, 110 hurdles (16.29); Frankie Pujols, eighth, 300 hurdles (44.08); Peter Lapointe, seventh, 400 (51.78); and Cadeo Estronza, 10th, 800 (2.04.65).

The Roughies’ girls 400 relay team was fourth in 51:51, and the boys’ 4x400 relay team was fifth in 3:30.92.
