Coplay: Saengerbund plans spring celebration

Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., is hosting its annual Maifest (May Fest) celebration 3-6 p.m. May 5.

Entertainment includes Dave Betz and the Auerhahn Schulplattler dancers. Wear your trachten as dirndl, lederhosen, vests, hats, etc. Join the party and dance around the maypole.

Maifest is a celebration of spring and is celebrated throughout the world.

There is a cost for members and guests.

The Saengerbund’s heritage committee sponsors numerous events that continue to foster understanding of the Austrian- German history that led to the creation of the club in 1917.

The committee is seeking additional members. If you want to assist and help preserve the historical underpinnings of the Saengerbund while having fun, consider joining the heritage committee.

Coplay Borough Mayor Steve Burker announced the schedule for the twilight summer concert series. Concerts are 6-9 p.m. at North Second and Chestnut streets.

The concert schedule includes Third Hand Trio May 8, The Castaways May 22, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyers June 5 and the Jeni Hackett Duo June 19.

According to Paul Boyle, public works director, the annual tire drop-off event is planned for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 11 in the upper parking lot at Coplay Parkway.

He also reminds residents street sweeping will be May 15 and 16. Watch for and honor the “no parking” signs on sweeping days.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St., will have a baked ham pickup dinner 4-5:30 p.m. May 11. The meal includes ham, filling with gravy, corn, applesauce/fruit cup, roll and dessert.

Coplay Garden Club will meet 7 p.m. May 30 in the social hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The club meets the last Thursday of the month.

Coplay Borough is seeking a pool manager, lifeguards, gate guards, a concession stand vendor and a person to clean the pavilion and social hall for the 2024 summer season.

Coplay’s fire department and fire police are reorganizing. If you have a desire to serve Coplay and surrounding communities, consider joining.

They are seeking volunteer firefighters and volunteer fire police.

Coplay Food Bank, located in the lower level of the municipal building, is open 8:30-10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month.

If unable to attend the scheduled Tuesday morning time frame, call Jodi at 610-262-0928 to make other arrangements.

The food bank needs coffee, spaghetti sauce and noodles, canned pasta, rice pouches and non-sweetened dry cereals. Monetary donations are always accepted.
