McClain, Shotwell reach career milestones in win

The Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team has had an up-and-down season thus far, trading wins with losses back-and-forth for the first 10 games.

But last week, the Hornets won two of their three games, one in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and the two others were nonconference games.

Emmaus began the week with a 21-10 win at Moravian Academy last Tuesday. Two days later, the Hornets downed Liberty in a conference matchup, 17-5. The week concluded with a close, 12-9 defeat at Southern Lehigh this past Saturday in the annual Crosse Out Cancer event.

In the win over the Lions, Jordyn Poll led the attack with four goals and an assist. Olivia Schmidt, Bri McClain and Rylie Poll recorded hat tricks, with the first two also dishing out two assists. Taylor Younker tallied two goals. Abby DiComes, Melea Weber and Kate Newhard finished with one goal and two assists and Sofia Isaksson had one goal and three assists. Olivia Candy and Katie Gross both scored a goal to round out the scoring. Alain Shotwell and Devin O’Neil each made one save in goal.

In the victory against the Hurricanes, Rylie Poll netted a game-high five goals. McClain, who finished with two goals and two assists, reached a milestone of her 100th career goal. Jordyn Poll, Schmidt and Gross all had two goals and an assist. Weber notched one goal and three assists and each of DiComes, Isaksson and Sarah Palazzo netted a goal. Shotwell also had a career milestone in getting her 300th career save in the game.

Emmaus trailed by just one (3-2) after the opening quarter at Southern Lehigh, but found itself behind 7-3 at halftime. The Hornets were trailing 11-6 after three and had a brief comeback, but fell short in the end.

McClain netted four goals. Weber tallied two goals and two assists. DiComes, Gross and Jordyn Poll all finished with a goal. Schmidt added an assist and Shotwell finished with five saves.

Emmaus (6-6 overall; 2-2 EPC) was at Freedom this past Monday in conference action and host Nazareth on Thursday in an EPC contest before finishing the week at Governor Mifflin on Saturday afternoon in a nonleague game.
