Northampton Community College

Local resident in ‘Drowsy’ production

Bethlehem resident and DeSales University theatre major Connor Roberts is the Swing for Man in Chair in the university’s Act 1 production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” from April 24 until May 5.

Act 1 is the highly acclaimed producing arm of the DeSales University Division of Performing Arts that encourages students to bring truth and beauty to the world through their art forms in plays, musicals, children’s theatre, dance concerts and film festivals.

The 2006 Tony-nominated Best Musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” is an “exquisitely honed hymn to the forgotten musicals of yesteryear” (“Variety”). The show opens with a dejected theater lover who cheers himself up by playing for the audience a record of his favorite musical, a fictional 1928 show. As the record plays, the stage is transformed into an impressive Broadway set, and a parody of a 1920s musical comedy is performed. The theater lover, invisible to the musical actors, comments on the story, the acting and the music during the show.

Students named to state academic team

Five students from Northampton Community College made this year’s All-Pennsylvania (All-PA) Academic Team, which consists of 64 students representing 14 community colleges from across Pennsylvania. The honor recognizes high achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom.

2024 All-PA Academic Team Transfer Scholars:

Morotiola Babajide and Zuzanna Solarz, Bethlehem campus

Workforce Scholars: Morgan Bizousky, Virtual campus; Ruturajsinh Chudasama, Bethlehem campus

President of NCC, David A. Ruth, Ph.D., said, “These students work very hard to reach their goals, both at the college and in their personal lives. Making this team speaks highly to all they’ve achieved at NCC and the positive contributions they’ve made to the community. I look forward to seeing what other amazing things they do!”

Students are selected for the All-PA Academic Team based on a thorough nomination and application process. The 2024 scholars are made up of 50 Transfer Pathway students and 14 Workforce Pathway students.

Transfer Pathway honorees plan to transfer to a four-year college after graduation. They must have completed at least 36 credits at a community college with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Pennsylvania’s community colleges partner with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) to provide Transfer Pathway students with tuition waivers at any PASSHE school.
