LHS tennis set to celebrate 100 years

The Liberty Hurricanes are celebrating 100 years of boys and girls tennis by hosting a doubles tournament for alumni, former and current coaches, and friends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 18 at the Liberty High School tennis courts.

Bethlehem High School, renamed Liberty in 1966, began its inaugural tennis season in 1924 under the leadership of JD McGann.

Since then, Liberty’s tennis program has had three coaches who have reached the 100-win milestone: Frank Kernan, Robert Wilson, and Leo Schnalzer (twice with the girls and boys).

In addition, Kernan, Wilson, Schnalzer, Sandy Seidel, Anthony Donchez, Gus Loupos, and current head coach Chris Conrad have all led a team to a district or league title.

Now, the current Hurricane players and coaches are calling on all alumni to participate in the doubles tournament.

There is a $5 registration fee for all participants that will be collected at the tennis courts on the day of the tournament with proceeds going to Liberty’s tennis teams.

To register, go to www.libertyhstennis.com, and click on the alumni tournament tab.
