North Catasauqua: Church plans dinner event

St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 1229 Third St., is holding a chicken dinner fundraiser, featuring Kauffman’s BBQ. The deadline to order is April 14, and pickup is set for 4-6 p.m. April 24 in the church hall.

The dinner includes half of a chicken, baked potato, coleslaw and cookies. There is a cost, which will benefit the church.

Reminder: Willowbrook Road is set to tentatively open April 12 for the Willowbrook Road bridge replacement project.

Dates are subject to change. All traffic will continue to be detoured.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 122 Union St., Catasauqua, will be holding its spring bingo April 14. The doors and kitchen open 11:30 a.m., and cash bingo will begin 1 p.m.

Bingo will consist of 15 games, six specials and a jackpot round. There is a cost. Additional game sheets are available for sale. Bring your daubers but no hard boards.

Outside food or beverages will not be allowed. The kitchen will have snack foods, as well as your favorite hot lunch items.

The next North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. April 15 in the basement-level meeting room at borough hall, 1066 Fourth St.

The next North Catasauqua Police Department Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting will take place 6 p.m. April 17 at borough hall. Topics to be discussed include medical marijuana act overview, crime statistics, community events overview and community concerns and issues.

North Catasauqua Borough has summer job openings for recreation art and crafts group leader and summer counselors.

The arts and crafts group leader will lead the arts and crafts program for youth in the summer recreation program and will receive $15 an hour.

The summer counselor position will assist in coordinating and implementing the arts and crafts program and will receive $13 an hour.

The hours for both positions are 9 a.m.-noon. The ideal candidates must love working outdoors, creating fun and engaging lessons and working with children of various ages.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must have current state-mandated requirements for working with youth, consisting of a state criminal history record check, state child abuse check and report of federal criminal history with fingerprinting. All clearances must be attached to the application.

The deadline to apply is April 21. Interviews will be held before May 7. Applications are available at borough hall.

The 2024 primary election is scheduled for April 23. The last day to apply for a mail-in or civilian absentee ballot is 5 p.m. April 16.

Completed mail ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. April 23.

The third annual Wine Under the Willows event is scheduled for May 11 at Lappawinzo Fish and Game Association, 25 Lappawinzo Road, Northampton. The event is currently looking for wineries and vendors to attend the event.

The borough is hiring for part-time summer help for the public works department. The position will pay $10 per hour or higher, based on experience.

With the spring thaw, it’s that time of the year for those nasty potholes. Extreme fluctuations in temperatures can contribute to potholes on the roads.

If you know of a pothole that can be a danger to vehicles and drivers on the road and needs repair, report it. For potholes in the borough, call the borough office at 610-263-1504 to give the location of the pothole so that the public works department can fix it.

Potholes on state roads may be reported to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD.

The Lions Club collects unwanted, used eyeglasses. The eyeglasses are distributed to those in need of eyeglasses around the world.

Used eyeglasses may be dropped off at Whitehall Township Public Library, 3700 Mechanicsville Road, or Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua.

Holy Trinity is also collecting old cellphones for recycling. Cellphones, smartphones and tablets are accepted and help to support a zero-landfill program and Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley. There are collection baskets and boxes in hallway outside fellowship hall or in the back of the sanctuary at the church for the eyeglasses and cellphones.

Spring is here, and it is a great time to visit Catasauqua Community Thrift Shop, 113 Bridge St.

The shop accepts donations of good, used clean clothing, household items and toys during regular store hours. Proceeds from the shop are returned to the community through contributions that support youth and adult programs and services.

The shop’s regular hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Best Buy stores are currently accepting televisions for recycling. Fees apply.

Customers will receive a $30 Best Buy gift card for reimbursement of the store drop-off fee. Televisions must be no larger than 49 inches for flat screens and no larger than 31 inches for tube TVs. There is a haul-away option for larger televisions.

Spring has finally arrived. Take the time to enjoy the longer days and upcoming warmer weather. Take a stroll around small Town USA or visit North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park, 701 Grove St., for some outdoor activities.
