Arthur D. Young

Arthur D. Young, 74, of Allentown, died Feb. 24, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Bethlehem. He was the loving husband of Mary Louise (Ronemus) Young for almost 52 years. A lifelong Allentown resident, he was the son of the late Arthur S. Young and Stella G. (Dunst) Young.

He grew up in South Allentown with his seven siblings and was a graduate of Dieruff High School. He was the go-to person in his family. From a young age he was very hands on, building rockets, robots and toboggans. He loved the outdoors, going rafting on the Lehigh River and driving through Shenandoah National Park.

He met his wife during the very first semester of LCCC in 1967. He majored in engineering and she in chemistry. She caught his attention when using micrometers in physics lab; they discovered the diameters of their hair matched! He continued his education at the University of Missouri, Rolla, focusing on aerospace engineering.

He held various jobs in the Lehigh Valley: bartender, draftsman, carpenter and foreman. He created AA Twin Builders, a construction business, with his twin brother. After witnessing a terrible car accident, he decided to learn more about emergency medicine, signed up for EMS training and volunteered on ambulances in Whitehall and Cetronia. As Paramedic 147 he worked for the City of Allentown. He created a detailed map book of Allentown, was instrumental in developing an emergency disaster plan and was mentor and teacher to many in EMS. He loved interpreting heart rhythms and explaining them to others. He retired after almost 30 years of service for the community.

After retirement, he enjoyed helping and being with his family locally and in Albany, N.Y., especially with his grandchildren.

He was a wonderful neighbor and friend, helping everyone with anything they needed, shoveling snow, fixing doors or windows, lending a helping hand or tool. He was approachable, kind and willing to help anyone.

He is survived by his wife; children, Adele, Alyssa and Christopher (Chelsea); siblings, Holly Myers, Andrew, Susanne (Mitch) Jones, Michael (Carol), Roger (Julie) and Cindy (Joe); sister-in-law, Deborah; lifelong friends, Bob and Dawn Martrich; grandchildren, Sophie Handyside, Mariam and Adam Ramadan, Avery and Aidan. He was predeceased by a brother, Gerald.

Contributions may be made in his honor to the Donna M. Crandall Foundation, Donate Life, St. Luke’s Hospice House or the charity of your choice.

Family and friends are invited to attend his Celebration of Life at the Fearless Fire Co., 1221 Front St., Allentown, 2 to 6 p.m. March 15.
