MAMA’S MUSINGS Broken car sounds

Remember last column I mentioned that my new SUV was rear-ended by a big truck? Well, my car is finally going to get fixed. It’s both daunting and exciting. Driving around with vinyl taped to the rear window has been a little nerve-wracking. While I am happy that I happened to have clear vinyl left from a project, the “pwoof” sound it makes every time I close the car door has been a bother.

My 10-year-old son, James, figured out how to access the back of the car by dropping his seat back. Of course, the first time we needed to do it, everyone got in the back seats before I could tell them to wait, and it got silly from there. Since then, we have done all we can to avoid using the back of the car.

The other issue is the backup camera. It still works, with a caveat. Every time I put the car in reverse, the car thinks there is something behind me, even if the way is clear. So whenever it is in reverse, it makes a steady high pitched noise. I can look at the camera and the mirrors, but the sound is unnerving.

Then there is the rear wiper. It happens that this model has the rear wiper on a switch at the end of the wiper lever. Somehow, every time I use the wipers, my hand bumps the switch. (It’s very sensitive). Then the rear wiper swipes mostly at air, but a little on the vinyl, and the sound is just awful, kind of a scritching noise. Did I mention we are all a little sound sensitive?

I am very that James and I were not injured. I am also glad I have been able to keep driving the car while the insurance process happens. But I will be ecstatic when the car is fixed. No more “beeeeep” in reverse, and no more “pwoosh,” and no more “scritch!”
