“Home-Grown Fun”: Great Allentown Fair brings out the stars for Fairgrounds Grandstand concerts

The 171st edition of the Great Allentown Fair, Aug. 30 through Labor Day Sept. 4, has as its theme for 2023 that of “Home-Grown Fun.”

That’s true for the displays, home-grown and home-made exhibits and culinary contests in the Agri-Plex, and the livestock judging on the Fair’s west side, as well as the free entertainment available daily with the price of admission, and the ticketed rides on the Powers’ Great American Midways.

The big ticket is undeniably at the Fairgrounds Grandstand. This year, there’s something for everyone, from power ballads of Reo Speedwagon and prog-rock of Styx, who co-headlined in 2001 at The Fair; contemporary country of Tyler Hubbard, of Florida Georgia Line; hip-hop star Nelly, whose “Heartland” features Florida Georgia Line; Yung Gravy, with fellow rapper bbno$ (baby no money), and country music’s international superstar Keith Urban.

Oh, and by the way, what would Labor Day be without the annual J&J Demolition Derby on the main straight of the Fairgrounds Raceway? Drivers play “crash ‘em, smash ’em” in three qualifying heats until the last vehicle running becomes “The Beast of the East Champion.”

Three fender-crunching heats featuring full-size cars, 1980s or newer, and compact cars will return to the Fair. This year includes an exhibition of battery-operated riding toys, Power Wheels. The Kids Power Wheels exhibition allows children ages 4-10 to show off their driving skills on the historic racetrack.

The Great Allentown Fair has extended hours at its Main Box Office for the purchase of Grandstand Show, ride and Fair admission tickets.

The Fair Box Office sells tickets to the Fair’s six Grandstand shows, prepaid premium parking, advance discount tickets for all-day ride wristbands and advance half-price admission tickets to the Fair that can be used at the gates whenever regular admission is charged.

The Box Office accepts cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
