Father’s Day is a tough observance for our kids, giftwise. Matt doesn’t want or need many little things and the power and lawn and garden tools that he loves are out of budget.

Ben nailed Father’s Day this year. Matt has taken Ben out a few times to hit a bucket of balls at a local golf course. Ben decided to return the favor with a surprise outing to the driving range.

The night before he texted and asked me to get Matt to take the dogs for a walk so he could get the golf clubs in the car. Ben is still working on his driver’s license so he planned the route so the errand they had scheduled for the day took them near the driving range.

Matt confused him a little by adding another stop and changing the route. It ended up with them pulling into the golf course so Ben could “get his bearings.” He pulled into a parking space, turned to Matt, and said “Happy Father’s Day!” Matt replied, “This is really nice, Ben, but I don’t have my golf clubs.” Ben answered, “Yes, you do. They’re in the back.” Matt had never noticed them! Way to go, Ben!

The next township column will be published Aug. 16; copy deadline is Aug. 10.
