Parkland Garden Club: Turning old into new

BY HELEN PAPATHANASIOU

Special to The Press

Donna Smith presented her program “Repurpose, Reuse and Reinvent” during the Parkland Garden Club’s June 12 meeting.

Smith and her sister, Joan, create garden art from earlier era treasures.

They take decorative old glass and dishes and combine them with unique modern pieces to make something new.

Each handcrafted unique piece, is waterproof and can withstand outdoor conditions.

These new pieces can be a bird feeder, bird bath or just an art piece.

Donna said their pieces can be described as “This, That and the Other Thing,” a phrase from her father.

She brought along samples of the garden art the two sisters created.

Donna said silicone is the best adhesive to glue the different pieces together.

Also, she noted, it is very important there should be no air pockets between the pieces being glued together.

The sisters started this type of project about eight years ago because they wanted to save old treasures from ending up in a landfill.

Their Instagram is 2redheadsisters.
