Lloyd wins D-11 gold

Tommy Lloyd beamed on the top step of the medals podium as the Whitehall sophomore was crowned District XI javelin champion at the district’s Class 3A Track and Field Championships on May 17 at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.

“It was an awesome feeling,” Lloyd said, still beaming.

Lloyd’s winning throw was 172-09.

“”The wind was coming straight at our faces, but I didn’t adjust at all. I just decided, you know what, the weather’s gonna be bad, and I just got out there and threw,” said Lloyd. “I had a lot of confidence coming into the season, and then, really, my coaches helped me a lot. I trained harder throughout the entire week (before districts).”

Ian Thomas was the district’s silver medalist in long jump with a distance of 22-03.25.

Vinson Eggleston won silver in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.09.

The Zephyr senior made an adjustment to his race since the previous week’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet.

“I waited a little more, once I got to the back stretch, to start kicking it more, and then once I saw the kid in lane five getting ready to catch me, I started to push it a lot harder, and it pushed me through to the end,” said Eggleston. “Yesterday, I had a rough day in the 200 (meter dash), but I made sure to recover from that and make it better today. It felt great. I felt honored.”

Greg Sommer shared the bronze medal in pole vault with Northampton’s Andrew Szeplaski, clearing 13-03.00.

Lloyd, Thomas, and Eggleston will compete at the PIAA Track and Field Championships on May 26 and 27 at Shippensburg University.
