Latchford locks down Cardinals

After a pair of losses to the end the regular season, the Emmaus baseball team posted a come-from-behind victory over Pocono Mountain East last week in the first round of the East Penn Conference playoffs.

The No. 4 seed Hornets (14-7) fell behind the Cardinals 3-0 in the top of the second inning. Emmaus made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Cohen Schadler singled to score Emmitt Budick.

After PME (14-6) posted another run in the top of the third, Emmaus kept coming back in the bottom of the inning.

Colin Wilson singled to score Zachary McElroy and Chad Kauffman scored on an error to get the Hornets within a run at 4-3 after three innings.

Emmaus took the lead in the fourth inning when Jackson Merk scored on a Noah Hogan ground out to tie the game before Schadler came around on a McEllroy single for a 5-4 lead.

The Hornets added a run in the sixth on a McEllroy sacrifice fly that scored Logan Ravier.

Ryan Latchford got the win for Emmaus. He came on in the third inning and allowed two hits and no runs over five innings while striking out five Cardinal batters.

Emmaus moved on to Monday’s league semifinal to face top seed Parkland (19-2).
