Zephyr Grab and Go set for May 20 at WHS

Whitehall-Coplay School District is planning to hold its second annual Zephyr Grab and Go 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 20 in the cafeteria of Whitehall High School, 3800 Mechanicsville Road.

Michelle Khouri, district registrar and community relations, said the idea for the event came out of a conversation with Dr. Christina Figueroa, a WHS teacher.

“We were both volunteering at a coat drive in November 2021, and we were talking about ways to further assist our families in need. Christina had mentioned she would love to be able to collect items and have a yard sale where families could take what they need,” Khouri said. “I had similar ideas for a while, and all it took was Christina to bring this idea up - and we decided to move forward and run with it. Last year, in May 2022, was our first Zephyr Grab and Go event, which was very successful.”

School district families and the community enthusiastically contribute to this event. Khouri believes people are inspired to do some spring cleaning as the weather gets warmer.

“Instead of throwing out items they no longer need, they have an opportunity to donate their unwanted items to families in need,” Khouri added.

At last year’s event, donations filled the high school cafeteria, and there was only one donation drop-off time. The response was so overwhelming that two additional drop-off times were added. Gently used household items and clothing were collected during April 14 and 28 drop-offs. Those interested in donating have an additional chance to do so - 4-7 p.m. May 19 in the WHS cafeteria.

The Whitehall Area Rotary Club helps by sorting and displaying all the items. Student volunteers help on the donation drop-off dates as well as during the event.

The event is open to all Whitehall and Coplay residents who are in need. Proof of residency is required to shop at the event.

Guests of this event shop for items for free. WCSD is proud to be able to host this event where our community comes together to help those who are in need, Khouri said.

Any items left over at the end of the event are donated to New Bethany Ministries.
