Board hears proposal for pocket park

At the May 1 workshop meeting, Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners heard the first steps of a proposal for Packer Avenue.

NAI Summit associate broker Matt Sprung was present at the meeting to represent the owner of 9 Packer Ave. The owners of the property live out of state and no longer have use for the property.

The 2.4 acres of vacant property on Packer Avenue have become a dumping ground for tires and other items.

While a large majority of the property is “geographically challenging,” there is 0.6 acres of flat land available to be developed.

Sprung suggested the flat land could be turned into a pocket park, such as a tot lot, community garden, dog park or outdoor gym. Each of these ideas would allow township residents to come together and would increase property values and quality of life.

He also proposed an off-street, permitted parking lot that would generate additional revenue for the township or affordable housing.

In other business, Brandon Hibbler, the new recreation director, introduced himself to the board.

Hibbler spent the last four years working as an assistant recreation director in Bethlehem. He said he hopes to expand and modernize recreation in the township, as well as make it accessible for all residents.

The commissioners will next meet 7 p.m. May 8 in the municipal building, 3219 MacArthur Road.
