BAVTS - Spring happenings by Jada Wackley

Our annual Career Fair was hosted March 29, with a variety of industry professionals, military and colleges represented as well. Students had the opportunity to interact with professionals regarding opportunities available from Tobyhanna Army Depot, Lutron, RL Reppert, Penske, Gracedale, Victaulic and many more. The event is typically hosted every year at the end of March to encourage full-time employment for seniors and summer employment for underclass students.

Another event BAVTS hosted was The Girl Scout STEM session for the girls from Troop 845. Students participated in Germ Transmission & Handwashing (Science), 3-D Printing (Technology), Breadboarding (Engineering) and The Big Inch Project (Math). The girls discussed how to research STEM careers and how to share this knowledge with others. They will use this activity to complete a badge related to STEM exploration. BAVTS students Adangelis Ortiz-Torres, FR-12; and Sheilymar Rodriguez, FR-12, assisted with the Big Inch activity.

Registration is now open for the The Lehigh Valley Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls and is open for girls aged 12-18. Camp is FREE to attend, but spots are limited, so be sure to apply early. The camp will be hosted at our school this year from June 26-30 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The link is included for your convenience. https://www.letsbuildcamp.com/lehighvalley.

BAVTS’ Bridges Foundation was created to invest in the workforce of the future. Its mission is to provide deserving students of BAVTS the ability and financial support to fulfill their career aspirations. On April 13, the Bridges Foundation’s fundraiser at the Blast Furnace Room at ArtsQuest was a night of fun and food provided by the BAVTS Culinary Arts and Baking students. Foundation members, sponsors and Bridges Alumni gave presentations. The evening also featured a silent auction.

This year the Foundation will be recognizing 26 students for their achievements. Students complete an application and are selected based on school activities, community service, awards and work experience. Other factors taken into consideration include attendance, grades, years at BAVTS and teacher recommendations.

The foundation is instrumental in providing awards for both education and tools for the recipients’ future. Since its inception, over $900,000 has been awarded to students to continue in their chosen career path.

The Bethlehem Rotary Club’s Vocational Service Committee honors our students on a monthly basis regarding their accomplishments. Students prepare and give a speech and are awarded a monetary gift. Bethlehem AVTS and the Bethlehem Rotary have held numerous events together over the years. Some of those events include their former spaghetti fundraisers, Taste & Tunes, and the Bridges Golf Tournament.

The club has also sponsored BAVTS students for the leadership program at Camp Neidig. Students and Rotarians have also participated in painting a mural in Bethlehem, maintaining the Greenway and grounds of Bethlehem Ice House, as well as other community events. We are proud of the relationship established between the two entities since 1999 and are honored that they recognize our students’ achievements.
