Trojans win two league games in opening week

The Parkland High School girls lacrosse team opened its 2023 regular season portion of its schedule with back-to-back wins in three days in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play last week.

The Trojans held on to defeat Nazareth in the opener on the road last Tuesday, March 21, and then were victorious in the home opener against Liberty last Thursday.

Against the Blue Eagles, Parkland took a slim, one-goal advantage into halftime, ahead 9-8. The two teams went goal-for-goal in the second half and the Trojans were able to sneak out of Nazareth with a 15-14 win.

Gigi Leonzi paced the offensive attack, finishing with a game-high 10 goals and added four assists. Ella Esteban tallied two goals and each of Anna Sensinger, Hannah Car and Sara Filipivitz had one goal. Sensinger added two assists while Riley Santa-Anna contributed one assist. Goalkeeper Hailey Smith made 12 saves in net.

The second game of the season wasn’t as nail-biting as the first one was. Parkland took a two-goal (7-5) lead at halftime and outscored the Hurricanes 8-2 in the second half to walk off its home turf with a 15-7 victory.

Leonzi once again led the Trojans offense with five goals and two assists. Esteban was just behind, finishing with four goals. Sensinger recorded three goals and one assist and Santa-Anna, Car and Madi Roseman all had one goal apiece. Car had two assists while Santa-Anna added one. Two goalies combined to make five saves as Smith stopped four shots and Kayla McNevin finished with one save.

Parkland has three games this week, two of which are on the road and two are from out of conference. The Trojans were at Pleasant Valley this past Tuesday and then host Southern Lehigh in nonconference action Thursday before traveling to take on Central Bucks West in a nonconference game on Saturday.
