No-till farming at the heart of the pollution reduction plan

Jason Smith of Hanover Engineering made a presentation to the Upper Milford Township board of supervisors about the pollution reduction plan at the March 16 meeting.

Smith explained the original plan from Hanover Engineering met the needs highlighted by the township regarding stormwater basins at the time. Over the years, factors such as sediments, have become an issue.

In the past, no provisions on the types of farming were mentioned. Focusing on agriculture has now become a priority, specifically in the types of farming.

No-till farming is seen as an effective way to reduce sediments. Smith explained that there is no-till high residue, no-till low residue, as well as conservation tillage farming.

No-till high residue farming is seen as the most effective way to farm and provide low sediments. Much of the materials, such as stems and corn stocks, are thrown back on to the field after harvesting.

He believes if the township moves toward this type of farming, much money will be saved.

Smith went on to explain “the plan was sent in draft to DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) because this is one of the first times that they are getting this. This is the first time that we have done it.”

In other meeting news, the supervisors agreed to a March 15 request from Macungie Police Department for Vera Cruz Fire Department Station 28 to provide Special Fire Police to help with traffic control for the following events: the Antique Truck Show taking place June 16 and 17, Das Awkscht Fescht Aug. 4 to 6 and Wheels of Time Car Show Aug. 25 to 26.

Pastor Lori Esslinger of Old Zionsville United Church of Christ sent a letter requesting assistance to ensure safety and security from the township for the “Cross” Walk taking place Good Friday, April 7.

The walk will begin, rain or shine, 2 p.m. at the Upper Milford Mennonite Church and end at Old Zionsville United Church of Christ.

The last time this walk took place was 2019. The supervisors agreed to provide Special Fire Police for this event.

The 2023 Public Outreach Campaign for the Update of the 12 Year Program is up on the township website. Public feedback is encouraged for this transportation planning.
