Boden Burkhart second, district swim this weekend

On Saturday, Feb. 25 the Northampton varsity diving team claimed their place in Northampton aquatic history at the PIAA District XI, AAA Diving Championships.

The K-Kids tallied the most diving medals in recent seasons and a strong championship performance by all four of the qualifying dive team members. Leading the team’s winning performance was Boden Burkhart with an overall score of 216.70, topping his season-best score of 215.15. Burkhart not only secured a silver medal in the boys AAA 1 meter, six-dive competition, but also cemented a spot in the PIAA State Diving Championships, which will take place on March 18 at Kinney Natatorium, Bucknell University.

Also medaling in the district championship diving meet was sophomore Bella Kish with a fourth place finish (189.85) and Andrew Szeplaki also in 4th place for the boys (192.40). Alex Szeplaki placed seventh with a score of 167.90. As an added accomplishment for the Northampton diving team at districts this year, each of the four participating divers posted season-best scores at this championship meet.

While the diving squad’s season draws near its close, the Northampton varsity swimmers prepare for their district championship meet that begins this Friday, March 3.

Four swimmers from the Northampton swim team will participate in the District XI AAA 2023 Championship meet at Parkland High School. Senior Co-Captain Ava Gower led the girls individual event qualifiers for this championship meet with a 12th seed in the girls 200 individual medley event.

Gower is also seeded 16th in the girls 100 butterfly event. Sophomores Ava Keenan and Gabriella Oswald join the Northampton list of qualifiers with Keenan seeded 15th in the girls 200 freestyle and Oswald is seeded 16th in the girls 100 freestyle event.

For the Northampton boys team, junior Ryan Franke is the lone individual event qualifier with an eighth seed in the boys 200 freestyle event and a 10th seed in the boys 100 backstroke. Brenna Caley, Ava Aulisio, and Ethan Brobst also qualified as alternates for the district championship meet.
