Phyllis F. Handwerk

Phyllis F. Handwerk, 80, of North Whitehall Township, died Sept. 20, 2022, in Fellowship Manor, Whitehall.

She and her husband, Allen W. Handwerk, celebrated their 48th anniversary this year.

Born Aug. 3, 1942, in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late George Y. and Estelle (Wasnak) Fetzer.

She was a graduate of Allentown High School, East Stroudsburg State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, and Lehigh University, from which she earned a Master’s degree in reading education.

She was a teacher in the Allentown School District for 35 years before retiring in 1999.

She enjoyed having lunch with her Washington Elementary retirees.

A member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Whitehall, she served on numerous church committees.

She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Janet F. (Robert) Holley of Summerville, S.C., by one nephew, two nieces, one great-nephew and two great-nieces.

A Celebration of Life service will take place 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 4331 Main St., Whitehall, with the Rev. James W. Schlegel officiating. There will be no calling hour. Private interment at Egypt Cemetery, Whitehall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, or to a charity of one’s choice c/o the funeral home.
