Lehigh 10U goes 2-2 in Section 6 Tourney

After Lehigh Little League’s 10U all-stars were crowned District 20 champions last month, Lehigh competed in the Section 6 Tournament where they went 2-2 from July 18 to 21 at Warwick.

Lehigh dropped its first contest against Council Rock Newtown, 4-2.

“Our hitting wasn’t there today, at least not what we had hoped,” said Lehigh manager Mike Ondria. “We knew we were gonna face some tough pitching. Bats were just a little sluggish today.”

Newtown’s bats were also sluggish against Lehigh pitcher Coltin Brozino who tossed three scoreless innings, and his RBI double in the top of the fourth inning scored Miguel Medina who had a leadoff base hit to left center field. Pierce Knoble’s single down the first base line then added another run for Lehigh.

A lightning delay followed by a rain delay may have disrupted Lehigh’s momentum, however.

“It seems like it takes your energy, your emotions. No matter what the score was before, you’re starting a whole, new game,” Ondria said. “We come out of that rain delay, and they’re ready to hit the ball when they weren’t really hitting the first couple innings.”

Newtown saved its best hitting for the bottom of the fifth, topped off by Nick Schiller’s triple to center field.

“We knew this was a big game, and we know that this is the team,” said Ondria, “so we have to play the next three days to get to the championship game.”

Lehigh proceeded to defeat Stroudsburg the next day, 9-3, and Franklin Township, 9-6, one day later.

That pitted Lehigh against Newtown for the second time when Newtown was crowned Section 6 champion after defeating Lehigh, 8-4.
