August event lineup

Wildlands Conservancy, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus, offers a variety of programs in August. Registration is available through the conservancy website, WildlandsPA.org.

August programs include:

•Paddling 101: Wy-Hit-Tuk Park, 510 PA-611, Williams Township, 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 13

This is a family program including professional instruction in both canoes and kayaks in the canal. Participants gain an overview and learn the basics of paddling including safety, proper equipment and basic technique. All equipment is provided and a professional safety staff will facilitate all sessions. The program is free. •You & Me, Creek Float, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 18.

“You & Me” is a program designed for children ages 3-5 and their grown-ups. Participants will cool off in the Little Lehigh Creek with a guided tube float, then meet some of the aquatic wildlife. There is a cost per team, per program and each team must include one child and one adult. There is an additional cost per additional child in a team. Programs are held at Wildlands Conservancy’s Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus. This program is outdoors and appropriate dress is suggested. •Bike & Boat Adventure: Mauch Chunk Lake Paddle, 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 21.

Participants will enjoy a quiet lake paddle in the mountains of Carbon County and may see bald eagles, ducks, herons and other wildlife. Canoes, paddles and safety equipment will be provided and safety staff will lead. There is a cost for the event. Participants will meet at Mauch Chunk Lake Boat Launch B: Lentz Trail, Jim Thorpe. •Wild! at the Ford, Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville, noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 21.

Explore the creek and the trails and learn about the local birds and wildlife. Follow the entry road past the Lehigh Valley Zoo to the parking lot to the ford across the Jordan Creek. No registration required. This program is provided free of charge.

Additional programs include wellness walks and hikes Aug. 13, 20 and 27.
