Hanover sewer project delayed

The Aug. 3 Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council meeting ran with only three members, as Anthony Rossi and Robert Lawlor were not in attendance.

During the review of reports, township Engineer Al Kortze discussed the Allendale sewer replacement project, saying production has been delayed due to a material shortage, but he expects to have a start date in the coming weeks.

Township Manager Melissa Wehr mentioned Hanover Township’s second annual Community Day will take place 4-7:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Canal Park, 1960 Dauphin St. She said attendees can expect to see an array of attractions, including a petting zoo, animal adoption, food and craft sales and fingerprinting for kids.

The event is still accepting participating vendors. To reserve a table at the event, download the form at hanleco.org/forms/communityday_vendor_app.pdf.

In other business, council passed resolution 2022-40, approving the 2023-27 five-year capital program. There was a separate special council meeting regarding the budget before the July 20 meeting, leaving little discussion surrounding the approval of the resolution during the Aug. 3 meeting.

Council also passed resolution 2022-41, which will resume compliance checks that follow the Pennsylvania Construction Code for the township’s commercial properties. These were once routine checks performed in the past but were put on pause during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The compliance checks will now pick up again and maintain a schedule for several areas.

During courtesy of the floor, Vice Chairman Michael Woolley said he noticed a change in routine garbage pickups. Wehr reported the organization has been dealing with staffing issues, causing a shift in the regular schedule.

Chairman Bruce Paulus said the group had to outsource additional workers from Philadelphia a few weeks back to complete collection, and that evidently caused some missed pickups.

The township hopes to have this matter resolved soon but asked for residents’ patience as the trash collection organization deals with the staffing shortage.

Council next meets 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the municipal building, 2202 Grove Road. Visit hanleco.org to view the agenda ahead of time.
