Council keeps hopes for pool afloat

Borough Council voted 6-0 on two motions that may reopen the Stanley Avenue Pool in 2023. The first motion amended the March 23 motion that closed the pool for the 2022 season.

The second motion authorized proper maintenance for the pool to keep it viable for the future. Council also passed a resolution authorizing a cooperation agreement with the Borough of Hellertown for resident use of the Hellertown Pool. This also passed 6-0, The agreement will allow borough residents to use the Hellertown Pool during the 2022 season at resident prices.

Citizens’ Committee Chair Mike Zovko said the May 12 meeting was attended by about 25 people to discuss creating a tax exempt 501C3 organization to administer the pool. He said progress is painfully slow, but, “The spirit of the group we’ve got together is extremely vigorous.” He added there were many new ideas for possible pool programming.”

Zovko said another meeting will take place sometime in July.

An ordinances prohibiting the use of tobacco products in the Stanley Avenue Park, including electronic smoking devices, also passed 6-0. The playground opened June 13 and will operate programs Monday to Friday 9 a.m.-noon and 6-9 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 22.
