EHS boys claim fifth place at league meet

Emmaus boys track and fielders Kyle Moore and Aiden Hurlburt are not only good, they are also winners.

Last week at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference track and field championships at Whitehall High School, Moore was tops in the long jump, while Hurlburt took first in the high jump with a 14-foot soaring performance.

Both young men helped the Hornets finish fifth overall with 66 points. Nazareth won the tournament with 85 points.

Emmaus coach Kami Reinhard said the Hornets have a solid roster in all categories and besides the athletes themselves, another group deserves plenty of credit.

“All credit goes to our coaching staff, who commits so much time and effort to his or her event groups to build them to be as great as they can be,” Reinhard said. “In the next five years, we look to become even stronger in each event group.”

Moore also had a strong day in the triple jump with a second-place finish. Another silver finisher was distance runner Ethan Strzempek, who won second in the 3,200 meters with a 9:57.09 mark. Teammate Conor Fisher finished fifth in that same race, while Emmaus’ Oscar Felegy won sixth. Another sixth-place runner was Holden Brown in the 800-meter run. The 800-meter relay team took bronze in 8:19.24. Meanwhile, fielder Lucian Freeman meant business in taking fifth in the high jump.

The intense track season is nearing an end and although the athletes are in outstanding physical condition, it doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes get tired.

“The athletes didn’t get much rest this season,” Reinhard said. “At one point we had three big meets in six days, out of our control. But they persevered through those meets to charge forward, which was pretty awesome to see.”

The District 11 Class 3A track and field championships are next, set for May 17 and 18 at Whitehall High School.
