Borough council ups business fee

At Coplay Borough Council’s regular meeting May 10, a motion was made to approve resolution 1491 to update the fee for a new business application from $150 to $350.

Council voted and unanimously approved the new fee to be put into effect.

Council also approved the hiring of seven returning lifeguards and one new lifeguard, in addition to three returning admission attendants, for the borough’s Parkway Pool this summer.

A motion was made to approve the sale of Coplay pool passes to residents from the Catasauqua Borough in the following amounts: $90 for a student, $100 for an adult and $200 for a family of four, with each additional family member paying $20.

As noted at the May workshop meeting, Catasauqua residents will not have access to their own pool this summer, so Coplay Borough is making this special offer to its neighbors.

Council voted on and gave approval to Coplay Fire Department’s request to host a coin-toss fundraiser, planned for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. May 28 at Second and Chestnut streets.

The fire department was also granted approval to utilize the 165 Cherry St. building for a fundraiser.

Elavon was approved by council to be used as the credit card processing company for the borough. The borough office and police station will now be able to take credit card payments from individuals.

Council members voted on and approved the date of the dedication of the new Parkway playground equipment for noon June 18.

A motion was made to approve resolution 1490 to use American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 funds. The act was signed by President Joe Biden in March 2021 to provide financial support to local governments to help them recover from the COVID-19 impact.

The resignation of Michael Dreisbach from the building board of appeals was approved, since Dreisbach is now serving on borough council.

A correction to the published article regarding the May 3 workshop meeting: The borough is in a favorable position to receive a federal grant that will provide additional funding for body cameras to be worn by the police department. However, this grant will require some expenses to be paid by the borough - approximately $6,000-$7,000.

Initially, The Press reported there would be no cost to the borough. The borough is hoping to qualify for another grant at the state level that, if approved, would essentially equal out to a zero cost to the borough.
