Patriots lose to PHS in EPC volleyball playoffs

Freedom did enough to qualify for the East Penn Conference playoffs, but the Patriots didn’t have enough ammo to fight off a traditional power in the league quarterfinals Monday night.

The Pates fell to Parkland in three games (25-13, 28-26, 25-14), as they now prepare for the District 11 tournament next week.

John Yanek’s squad came into the tournament as the sixth-seed, looking to upset the third-seeded Trojans, as well as avenging a five game defeat to Parkland from earlier this season.

However, that didn’t come to fruition, as Parkland moves on to play second-seeded Whitehall at 5 p.m. in Wednesday’s semifinals at Allen.

Freedom (14-7) closed out the regular season winning seven of their final eight matches, improving along the way, despite losing to top-seeded Northampton last week.

“We have improved in almost all of our weakest areas,” said Yanek of the team’s progress over the last month of the season. “They are playing together, never giving up and working hard to get back in the set or match. Trying to compete with the top five teams.”

The other match from Monday’s opening round saw Easton top Emmaus in a four-five matchup. The Rovers take on Northampton tonight in the 7 p.m. doubleheader at Allen. The league final is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday back at Allen.

Freedom will wait to be seeded for next week’s district tournament, which has seven qualifying teams.
