Liberty keeps rolling; EPC playoffs next

Liberty’s baseball team might just not know any better than to just keep winning.

The Hurricanes have continued their torrid play this season, winning 17 straight games following Monday’s 6-0 victory over Easton pushing them 18-1 on the year with a regular season finale against Pocono Mountain East on Wednesday.

Head coach Andy Pitsilos has coached for 19 seasons and this year’s group has certainly cemented themselves as a special group.

“This season is very rewarding considering how young we are,” said Pitsilos. “We just take one game at a time, prepare for it and let the rest take care of itself. There were a couple games where we needed a wake-up call early to refocus. Luckily we won those games.”

Some of those nail biters have included last week’s 3-2 win over Bethlehem Catholic and a 1-0 shutout over Nazareth in late April. All those steps have helped Liberty keep their momentum as the top team in the East Penn Conference and District 11.

It’s a surprise to Pitsilos, but a welcoming one that his staff will gladly take into the postseason.

“Well this young team maturing so fast is a bit unexpected,” he said. “It’s a testament to the kids working hard. I’m not sure if this winning streak is the longest or not during my tenure, but there has been one run games in there, three extra inning games in there, so we have been fortunate to keep the streak going. We just have to keep playing disciplined, fundamental baseball and we will give ourselves a shot at a title.”

Liberty has locked up the top-seed in the East Penn Conference tournament and will either play Pocono Mountain East Stroudsburg or Bethlehem Catholic in the first round of the tourney.

The Golden Hawks (10-9) have locked up a district berth in the process, as they’ve won four out of their last six games. They finish up the season on Thursday against Pottsville, but seem to be on the outside looking in at grabbing the eighth seed of the league tournament due to tiebreakers.

Freedom (6-13) saw their season end on Tuesday in a finale against Stroudsburg. The Pates struggled throughout the year, losing 11 of their last 13 contests following a 4-2 start to the season.
