Moore Township plans electronics recycling event, purse bingo

Moore Township Board of Supervisors, at its April 5 meeting, voted to hold an electronics recycling event 9-11 a.m. Aug. 6 at the township’s recreation center, 635 English Road.

With many municipalities or their contracted haulers no longer picking up electronic devices, the recycling events are becoming ubiquitous.

This recycling event is for Moore Township and Chapman Borough residents only. Depositors of electronics may need to show identification in order to drop off their unwanted items.

For additional information or questions, contact the Moore Township office or visit mooretownship.org.

An event happening sooner, announced at the meeting, is a purse bingo, organized by the Community Days committee, set for 1 p.m. May 1 at Klecknersville Rangers Volunteer Fire Company, 2718 Mountain View Drive. Doors open noon.

Contact Lois Kerbacher at 610-759-9449, ext. 5, or 610-704-5629 for more information.

A timber harvest is planned for this spring at Appalachian Park, located on Skunk Road. During a timber harvest, the dead, dying and diseased trees are removed, thus preventing the spread of fungi or bacteria, which may damage other parts of a forest. A timber harvest can also benefit wildlife.

Also, the Community Days celebration is set for Aug. 19 and 20 at the recreation center.

Richard Gable, liaison to First Regional Compost Authority and former Moore Township supervisor, reported the FRCA winter hours will remain during spring. Gable noted “ornamental grass” will no longer be accepted at FRCA because its grinding machine cannot properly dispose of the grass. Bamboo is also not accepted at the facility.

For more information, contact FRCA at 610-262-1000 or visit frcaweb.org.

The township public works department reported street sweeping is proceeding and is expected to be completed by the end of April.

It was reported the Nazareth Council of Governments regional comprehensive plan is near completion and will be reviewed by participating municipalities. It is expected the township planning commission will review the plan to provide input.

The 2022 road projects are set to begin. Plans for road improvements are for South Cigar Road, Love Road, Sickle Road and parts of West Beersville Road.

The agritainment/agritourism zoning ordinance was tabled until next month.

The township is negotiating with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regarding the signage suggested at Pool Road, widely considered a dangerous intersection with Pheasant Drive. The solution to the danger has been elusive, extending a period of months of discussion with no apparent, clear answer to date.

Schiavone Pond is a catch-and-release fishing pond that will be stocked with a variety of fish, and efforts to create a healthy habitat for fish and other aquatic life are desired. The dates of the stocking were not revealed as of the meeting.

Reached after the meeting, township Manager Nicholas C. Steiner said $750,000 of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act dollars will be transferred to the township’s general fund.

He also noted the new codification of township ordinances is proceeding as planned. The goal is to increase efficiency when working with and researching ordinances.

Steiner also said the township will be requesting a grant from Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program for funding to replace the current township municipal building.

The next board of supervisors meeting, in person only, is 6 p.m. May 3 at the municipal building, 2491 Community Drive.
