Parkland tennis starts 6-0

Parkland boys tennis coach Michael Hingston has a few sayings to keep perspective.

“I tell the boys ‘why go for a $10 shot when a $5 shot will do,” he said.

The psychology reminds his kids that tennis isn’t all that hard - you just make it hard.

The Trojans are off to a 6-0 start with a 5-0 win at Stroudsburg last Friday in what could be described as a challenging weather afternoon.

The marquee battle between Dan Zolotarev and Stroudsburg’s John Willis was interrupted by a fierce hailstorm, which in seconds made the court unplayable. Zolotarev, who was leading at the time, was declared the winner over last year’s EPC singles champ.

“Dan has played a little more aggressive this year compared to last,” the coach said. “He’s a little more offensive, which you need to be in the No. 1 slot.”

Playing well also is No. 2 singles Fyodor D’Souza. Like Zolotarev, D’Souza is an experienced and savvy senior.

“Fyodor and Dan are absolutely phenomenal leaders,” Hingston said. “They are excellent teachers.”

D’Souza is also the opportunistic players Hingston says he’s ever coached.

“No matter what he has to do, he will do it,” the coach said.

Parkland’s No. 3 Josh Thomas has displayed “a solid tennis acumen” and has “evolved his game” to include a punishing baseline attack or, when the time is right, coming into the net.

The Trojans’ doubles teams have played well, although they haven’t had much time working together, thanks to weather this season, which has minimized on-court practice time.

“They have the potential to complement one another,” Hingston said.

Parkland has tough road ahead, with matches scheduled against Freedom, Liberty and Moravian Academy during April.
