Borough building roof replacement to start April 11

At the April 5 Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting, public works Director Paul Boyle reported the replacement of the borough building’s roof will begin April 11 and continue for three to four weeks.

He also noted the playground equipment at Saylor Park has been installed.

The borough will begin to pick up yard waste April 22 and will continue through Sept. 30. Yard waste includes brush only. There will be no grass pickup.

Coplay residents may drop off grass clippings 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at 1 Bridge St. Residents are encouraged to mulch their grass whenever possible.

Code Enforcement and Zoning Officer Ronald Helman reported there is an ordinance in place that requires a resident’s address numbers to measure 4 inches high. This code is in place so emergency personnel can easily see addresses when responding to emergency situations.

Borough Police Chief Vincent Genovese distributed a document to members of council showing current fees for traffic violations, like parking tickets. Presently, a parking ticket in the borough has a fine of $15. This fine is considerably lower than most neighboring towns and townships.

Council discussed the possibility of increasing the fine to $20. Other revisions to traffic fines are being reviewed as well.

Councilman Rick Kern indicated the borough has submitted an application to be considered for a body camera grant for the police department.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer reported Coplay Public Library held a book and bake sale recently, which yielded a profit of $1,123. Eisenhauer expressed thanks to all those who came to the sale and supported the library.

She also reported the library is still in need of a director and two part-time employees for 12-15 hours per week.

Councilman Mark Molitoris noted a spring craft fair will take place April 23 and 24, with 32 vendors participating. Proceeds from this event will benefit Coplay Sports and Coplay Recreation and Welfare.

Council President Louis Bodish said the new borough facility on Bridge Street is officially complete. He mentioned an open house will be held at the facility sometime in May or early June.

The borough park and recreation committee, led by Molitoris, has proposed an increase in fees to day cares that bring children to the pool. The current charge is $40 per child, and the suggested increase is $50 per child. This item will be voted on at the regular council meeting April 12.

Also, on the agenda for the April meeting will be the approval for Lehigh County to use 165 Cherry St. as an election polling place.
