Stanley Avenue Pool may be closing

Council voted 3-2 March 23 to permanently close the Stanley Avenue pool March 23.

At issue is the expense and difficulty in finding lifeguards. Stew McCandless, a borough resident, spoke in favor of closing the pool at the Recreation Committee meeting earlier in the evening. He suggested replacing it with a dog park, sprinklers and a fountain.

The motion did not pass because a motion needs a majority of the seven member council to pass. The motion was tabled until April 4.

Voting for the motion was Councilwoman Annmarie Jordan, Councilman Douglas Trotter Jr. and Councilman Philip Trabel. Voting against the motion was Councilwoman Erica Graham, and Council President Norman Blatt, who was visibly upset at the thought of the pool closing permanently, saying, “I will mourn this day.”

Councilwoman Jaime Johnson and Councilman Will Ruff were absent.

Two ordinance drafts also passed. The first will prohibit parking on the south side of Ronca Street from the intersection with Lynn Street to the intersection with Bergen Street, and the second will reduce the Zoning Hearing Board from five to three members and one alternate.

Both passed unanimously and will go to public notice for two weeks before a vote at the April 4 meeting.

The Easter egg hunt is scheduled for April 9 with a rain date of April 10 at the Stanley Avenue Recreation Area.
