Boys hope to keep state ride going

Another game for the Konkrete Kids, another “Kardiac – yes, Kardiac – Kids” moment to highlight.

It has been a season like no other in Kids’ basketball, one that arguably can’t be topped with their dramatic overtime victories along the way.

The Kids have won three of four buzzer beaters this season. Ironically, it has been 50 years since Northampton last experienced a magical-type season like one. The KIds’ 1972, 26-3 squad won the school’s last district championship and marched its way to the state quarterfinals where they lost to Easton in a rematch of the District 11 title game.

That’s where this year’s Kids’ version played against District 7’s Fox Chapel in a PIAA Class 6A quarterfinal, the state’s version of the Elite Eight at Chambersburg High School Wednesday night, which came after Press print deadlines.

The Kids (21-7) entered the game off a 60-59 overtime win over District 3’s Warwick at Spring-Ford High School Sunday afternoon. A few days earlier, Northampton outlasted District 1’s Methacton, 50-49, in another overtime thriller.

Whether or not the Kids advance to Saturday’s semifinal where they would meet the winner of District 12’s Archbishop Wood-District 7’s North Hills winner, it has been a wild ride.

“Yeah, this season has been a roller coaster of emotions and events,” boasted senior guard and leading scorer Issac Harris, who also broke the 1,000-point career mark. “My team and I have put in a lot of work and time into our games and we are really connecting with each other.

“Going into the Elite Eight has been such an accomplishment not just for us, but also for our school and Northampton as a whole.”

Fellow senior Lucas Lesko, the Kids’ second-leading scorer, understood the season would be a unique one after the Kids recovered from their slow start.

“I remember starting out in the beginning of the season starting out poorly,” said Lesko. “Once we started winning, we got right back to the way we played all summer and it felt great.

“Getting that first win in states was amazing, but we wanted more and won the next one. Celebrating with my teammates while making school history feels absolutely incredible.”

Senior forward Cooper King has enjoyed the opportunity.

“I am very happy being one of the two teams that ever made it to the final eight in the state tournament,” said King. “This season has been crazy with all of our overtime wins and buzzer beaters.

“It definitely is going to be a senior season that I will never forget.”

Head coach Coy Stampone can appreciate all of the pieces of the Kids’ puzzle that have formed the unforgettable picture.

“We started out like usual where we got going at the Salisbury Christmas tournament,” he said. “We won 13 of 14 games as we beat East Stroudsburg North before the Christmas tournament.

“Our goals were to win the EPC (East Penn Conference) and districts, but we fell short. However, what a ride we have had in states. We defeated Methacton, the District 1’s number-one seed, we beat an outstanding Warwick team, and now the challenge of beating Fox Chapel.

“I have a great coaching staff of Matt Scholl, Ed Seidick, Phil Hall, Tyler Nicholas, Brian Davies, and Scott Johnson. We had big wins during the season with a split with ACC (Allentown Central Catholic), two wins versus Emmaus and Nazareth, a sweep of Whitehall, and three wins versus Allen.

“Hopefully, we can keep this going.”
