Kids, Zephyrs place at district swimming

Whitehall and Northampton swim teams produced three medalists at the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships held last Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Whitehall sophomore Aaron Stinner won bronze medals in the 200 freestyle and the 500 free.

“I was very excited when I saw the third place because I was seeded third and wanted to keep that third place,” said Stinner, whose time was 1:45.34 in the 200 free. “I went into the race open-minded because last year I didn’t have the greatest swim, and (this year) I took it out fast, and I dropped two seconds. I did surprise myself, actually. I got my goal time for the season. My legs were exhausted but I pushed through and got it done.”

Stinner also saw success in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.15.

“I’ve been training pace a lot, but I went into the race just like the 200 and took it out fast. At the 200 mark, I was winning, which, I was surprised. I kept every 50 under 30 (seconds), which was a goal of mine. And I finished the race and felt like I had the energy to get it done,” the distance swimmer said. “I was nervous for this race because it’s a long one, and depending on how you feel, it can break you down, but I felt like I took control of the race, and the race didn’t control me.”

Whitehall teammate Ian Thomas won a fourth-place medal in the breaststroke with a time of 1:02.04.

Northampton senior Olivia Szerencsits was a district silver medalist after completing her swim in the 500 free in 5:14.10.

“I felt like it went OK. Personally, I had hoped to do better but I think I did the best I could in the moment, and that’s all I could ask for. Around halfway, I hit a wall and knew I had to push through it,” she said.

Szerencsits won the fourth-place medal in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.80.

“I dropped in place and didn’t drop any time, so it wasn’t, again, what I expected or wanted. It was a little heartbreaking,” said Szerencsits. “It’s still an accomplishment.”

Whitehall’s Stinner time-qualified as an alternate in the 200 free for the PIAA State Class 3A Swimming Championships, scheduled for March 16 and 17 at Kinney Natatorium, Bucknell University.
