Fehr among Roughs to move on to the regional tournament

Catasauqua’s Gavin Fehr had a good feeling heading into the District 11 Class 2A tournament.

However, he was quite aware of a hurdle that could make him stumble in the 138-pound bracket. Unfortunately, it did.

The junior suffered a fall to Saucon Valley senior Ryan Crookham, who was a two-time state champion, in the semifinals. Yet, fate was working against Fehr.

“(Crookham) was injured last year, and he has been injured most of this year,” said Fehr about his opponent who was undefeated in just nine matches this season. “He didn’t wrestle much and he was seeded at the bottom.

“I figured I would meet him somewhere. But, overall, I was happy with everything.”

Fehr bounced back to deck Tr-Valley’s Chase Stephen in the third-place bout, and punched his ticket to regionals this weekend. He finished fourth at districts last season in the abbreviated COVID field.

“I had seen all of these guys before and I knew what was coming,” added Fehr. “I feel pretty confident right now with the way things are going. I have felt good since I won the Roughie tournament early in the season.”

Along with Fehr, senior Jaryn Hartranft, who has a 36-4 mark at 145, and fellow senior Cole Brown, who was at 132, will make the trip back to Freedom High School this weekend. The Roughies finished fifth as a team.

Hartranft suffered a fall to defending district champion - Notre Dame’s Evan Haag - in his bout, and Brown dropped a 5-0 decision to Saucon Valley’s Connor Nicholas.

Aside from the trio, sophomores Mikhail Hartranft (113), Miles Melendez (152), Chad Beller (189), and freshman Jon Cordon-Pinto (126) all made it to the third round of consolations.

Hartranft is looking forward to a possible rematch with Haag at regionals.

“Gavin, Cole and I are all very excited to get to regionals,” said Hartranft. “My main thoughts coming into districts was to wrestle my match and stay aggressive.

“My first match (at regionals) is against a kid I already wrestled, so I already know what to expect. I’m really hoping to get to the finals so I can likely get my rematch from districts.”

Fehr also is optimistic to reach the next level, and he is working on one specific aspect of his attack.

“I have been working hard on my shots,” he said. “That’s what I have been looking to improve at the end of the year. If I can keep doing that, I think I can be in good shape.”

As far as shots go, Fehr should have a good one.
