Happy 105th birthday!

Agnes Chabak, the last remaining of nine other siblings, turned 105 years young Jan. 10. She noted she also had a brother who lived to be 104.

Agnes currently lives at Fellowship Community in Whitehall. A birthday celebration with family and friends was held.

Joseph Chabak was her husband of “62.5 years,” she said. They had no children.

“I babysat everyone else’s kids, which was fun because they always go back home,” Agnes said.

When asked what she attributes her longevity to, Agnes noted she never smoked or drank alcohol, and she always watched her diet. For decades, she said she followed a gluten-free diet.

Recently, her doctor told her she can eat whatever she wants. Agnes said she always ate in moderation. Her favorite foods now are chicken fingers, Tater Tots, mashed potatoes and potato pancakes.

For fun, Agnes said she prays a lot, which helps her with relaxation, and she reminisces about her life with her husband, family and friends. She expressed disappointment with being recently confined to a wheelchair and her need for continuous oxygen.

Agnes said she went to eight years of grade school. She did work, but after her first year of marriage, her husband wanted her to be a homemaker, so she stopped working. She had a cat but had to give it up due to allergies to cat dander.

“I was born in my parents’ home, not in a hospital,” Agnes said.

While having been born in Catasauqua, she expressed pride in her Slovak descent.

When informed The Press would return to celebrate her 106th birthday, she expressed being content with her life.

Agnes ended the interaction, saying, “Tell everybody to not smoke and drink to live a long life.”
